About World Muaythai Federation (WMF)

The World Muay Thai Federation (WMF) is an international non-profit governing body established in 1995 in Bangkok, Thailand, dedicated to promoting, preserving, and expanding traditional amateur and Pro-Am Muay Thai globally while preserving the sport's deep cultural roots.

Historic Origins & Leadership

  • The Foundation: The WMF was formed by a coalition of martial arts pioneers, sports authorities, and military figures in Thailand to elevate Muay Thai to an internationally recognized Olympic-style sport.
  • Current Leadership: The federation is currently led by President General Akachai Chantosa, maintaining its strong historic ties to Thailand's cultural and sports ministries.

Core Mission & Culture

  • Preservation: Unlike purely commercial kickboxing leagues, the WMF strictly enforces traditional Muay Thai rituals, including the mandatory performance of the Wai Kru Ram Muay (respect ritual) and the wearing of traditional attire like Mongkons (headbands) and Prajiouds (armbands).
  • Sport Integrity: It governs over 70 member nations, enforcing unified ring rules, standardized weight classes, strict referee training, and rigorous anti-doping policies in line with international sports standards.

Major Initiatives

  • World Championships: The WMF is best known for hosting its massive annual World Muay Thai Championship in Bangkok, which bring together thousands of amateur and Pro-Am fighters from across five continents to compete for gold medals.
  • Global Education: The federation runs dedicated academies to certify international referees, judges, and Kruns (traditional teachers) to ensure the sport is taught safely and authentically worldwide.
